How we work out an offer
For scrap gold, the main things are the carat and the weight. A gram of 9ct gold is 37.5% pure gold, while a gram of 22ct is about 91.7% pure, so the carat makes a big difference.
For coins and some jewellery, the item can be worth more than its gold content. Rare sovereign dates, collectable coins and signed or antique jewellery are all valued as items, not just by weight.
That's why photos help: they let us spot pieces worth more than scrap.
Gold hallmarks and what they mean
| Stamp | Carat | Pure gold |
|---|---|---|
| 375 | 9ct | 37.5% |
| 585 | 14ct | 58.5% |
| 750 | 18ct | 75% |
| 916 | 22ct | 91.6% |
| 990 / 999 | 24ct | 99%+ |
Not sure what your stamp says? Take a close-up photo and send it with your enquiry. See our hallmark guide for more.
Tips for getting a good price
- Weigh your items on kitchen scales if you can, and tell us the weight.
- Photograph any stamps, hallmarks and dates clearly.
- Keep coins in their original boxes or capsules.
- Don't clean coins. Cleaning can lower their value.
