What does 925 mean?

Pure silver is too soft for everyday use, so it's mixed with a little copper to make it stronger. Sterling silver is 925 parts silver in every 1,000, which is why it's stamped 925.

You'll often find the stamp inside rings, on necklace clasps, on the back of pendants and on the back of spoon handles. British pieces may also have a full hallmark with a lion, a town mark and a date letter.

How much is 925 silver worth?

Scrap 925 silver is valued by weight and the current silver price. Because it's 92.5% pure, 100 grams of sterling silver contains 92.5 grams of pure silver.

Some 925 pieces are worth more than scrap, such as signed designer jewellery, antique silver and collectable items. Photos help us spot these.
